Spinnerstown SchoolThis red brick two-room school house was built in 1909 and was in use until 1955 when the new Lewis E. Pfaff Elemerty School was built. Grades one through four were taught in one half of the school and five through eight were taught in the other half. Sliding pocket doors with blackboards attached divided the two groups and could be opened for times when there were activities for all the grades to join in together.A lady by the name of Rosa Erney was the first teacher in 1909. More than twenty-two teachers worked with the children over these years with Fred Fegley and Hulda Meyers serving the longest terms of 26 years and 11 years respectively. Graduation exercises were held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Scheetz Church) just across the street. This was a combined graduation program for pupils from all the schools in Milford Township who were graduating from the 8th grade at that time. In June of 1997 our Society hosted the first reunion ever for people who had attended the school and the turnout was marvelous. People brought their class pictures and graduation programs to share and had a wonderful time reminiscing about the good old days. Plans are currently underway for a partial restoration of the Spinnerstown School since it is the only remaining school not turned into a private residence. Watch this website for updates on our progress.
According to our records, there were 12 one-room or two-room schools in the township during this time period. In September of 2002 we will be holding a grand reunion for all who attended these schools with the Spinnerstown School being the host for the event. All of the other schools still standing are now private residences. These schools are
