Damages To Mailboxes
Having a mailbox within a public road right-of-way is a privilege that comes with responsibilities including repair of any damage that your mailbox sustains during a storm.
Plowing snow is not an easy job, especially in the middle of a storm in the dark. Many times it isn’t even the plow that does the damage, just the snow & ice that comes off of it. You can be assured that the drivers do not do this intentionally and certainly try their best to avoid all damage to personal property.
To Avoid Damage To Your Mailbox
Check the condition of the upright/post and the fasteners. A rotten post with a mailbox that is dangling by a thread is more likely to come apart than one in good condition, with the mailbox firmly fastened to the post. The road crew has many things to watch for when plowing snow and sometimes mailboxes are hanging out too far into the road right-of-way.
Reason For Damage To Yards
Once again, plowing snow is not an easy job, especially in the middle of a storm in the dark. The road crew makes every effort to plow to the edge of the road, but sometimes it is impossible to see. The township has the right to use the whole road "right-of-way" and is not really responsible for minor damage within that area. Damage to lawn/grass is unintentional and unavoidable. Try to look at it as a small price to pay for living in the beautiful countryside.
How To Avoid Having Your Driveway Plowed Shut After You Just Finished Shoveling It!
Our drivers plow in the most efficient manner to create the safest driving conditions as quickly as possible. Plows deliver snow to the side of the road as long as the truck is moving. There is no way to "shut off" the flow of snow at driveway entrances. You can, however, assist in keeping your driveway clear by depositing all snow from your driveway to the left side, as you face your residence. Also, if you clear an area on the right side of the driveway, the plow may clear itself of snow before it reaches your driveway.
Driveway Snow Removal
When shoveling your driveway, avoid pushing snow across the street into your neighbor's property. Not only does it leave a mess & dangerous situation on the road, it really isn't very neighborly.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
It is against the law to put snow in the street!! When you plow your driveway, do not leave any snow or ice on the roadway. This threatens the safety and welfare of others.
Winter Weather Driving Tips
1) SLOW DOWN!!!! Many people drive too fast for conditions and cause accidents that could have been easily avoided.
2) Approach intersections and Stop signs slowly. You may not realize how slippery the road is.
3) Use extra caution around Plow trucks. The drivers have lots to watch for, they do not need the extra worry of hurried drivers passing them & then spinning out in front of them. Stay away from the back of the truck - if you can't see the mirrors, the driver doesn't know you're there. Another reason to keep your distance is to avoid being hit with salt or cinders. The road condition is always better behind the truck than in front of it.
